My First IPL Treatment

About two weeks ago, I visited Dr. Klein at Modern Dermatology for my first IPL treatment. IPL stands for intense pulsed light, but you may be familiar with the term “photofacial”. I am so lucky to be working with Dr. Klein as I prepare my skin for our wedding in July. Many of you have been asking if I am noticing results right away, and that is a tricky question. Most treatment plans require multiple sessions. I have noticed a decrease in redness the last few days, and my skin feels much softer. I have seen firsthand results from friends after a few treatments, which is why I’m so excited to see where my skin is later this spring.

Often, multiple devices are used during your sessions and Dr. Klein customizes the treatment plan based on your skin needs. For example, I have a lot of red in my face. Dr. Klein will customize my sessions to help combat the redness. Depending on what you’re treating you may look worse before you look better. Any brown pigment picked up by the IPL machine will become temporarily darker, making it look worse and more obvious. Within a few days the dark pigment will begin to flake off, leaving behind either lighter brown pigment than previously or hopefully no pigment at all. I’m about 10 days out from my first treatment, and I’ve had several people comment on how good my skin looks. (Score!) I’m also already noticing less redness after workouts or getting out of the shower.

Stay tuned, as I go in for my next session at the end of April. Feel free to comment below or email me any questions. I will be sitting down with Dr. Klein to answer all your wonderings about IPL and laser treatment in general!

  1. I’ve been interested in learning about microdermabrasion or other ways to reduce the look of my old acne scarring, but I haven’t heard of photofacial or IPL until I read your post. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. Interesting! I’ve never heard of IPL before. I would be so nervous to try this. Looking forward to seeing how the 2nd treatment goes!

  3. Do not do IPL, in the long run it will only age your skin. It melts your fat in face which causes terrible sagging and aging. I had only one procedure done and I had the exact opposite results to what they promise. If I knew about these potential damages,I would have never done this treatment. If I wanted to have any fat melted i would have had this machine working on my bum NOT my face!!!

  4. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your experience. It’s a shame to hear you had such a bad experience. I’m curious to know what technology was used for your procedure. I firmly believe it is important to find a board certified dermatologist when undergoing any cosmetic procedure (especially on your face) It’s my understanding that IPL targets the melanin in your skin- not the fat cells (as coolsculpting and other procedures do) Before undergoing my treatments, I did a lot of research and spoke with other people who also saw my dermatologist for IPL. All I heard was positive feedback! I’m happy with my decision 100%! 💕
